Driving Sustainable Construction Through IBS Innovation

YTL Cement Group, in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), hosted the Sustainable Construction: Industrialised Building System (IBS) seminar at CDL Academy. Supported by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB Malaysia), the event brought together consulting engineers to explore how IBS is accelerating the shift towards greener, more efficient construction.

The seminar opened with insights from Eastern Pretech, a member of YTL Cement Group, renowned for its expertise in precast building systems.

Mr. Matti Mikkola, CEO of Eastern Industries Pte Ltd, and Mr. Lee Mun Sam, CEO of Eastern Pretech Solutions Sdn Bhd, showcased how their prefabricated solutions—including their Prefabricated Bathroom Units (PBU)—can significantly boost on-site efficiency while lowering carbon emissions.

They presented past projects where their IBS solutions enabled more efficient and eco-friendly construction.

Mr. Ng Ming Kwong, Senior General Manager at YTL Cement, followed with a presentation on ECOCem™, our low-carbon cement specially formulated for precast applications.

Made by inter-grinding fly ash, ECOCem™ delivers the same strength and durability as conventional cement—while substantially reducing embodied carbon, making it a game-changer for sustainable building.

From innovation to application, Ms. Tan Pei Yih, Senior Technical Manager at QuickMix Solutions, also a member of YTL Cement Group, took the stage to share advancements in grout technology for IBS systems.

She presented a case study on Non-Shrink Grout 218 (NSG), a high-performance solution engineered for precision and impact resistance in IBS jointing and levelling. She supported her presentation with a live demonstration.

En. Mohammad Faizal Bin Abdul Hamid from CIDB Malaysia rounded off the session with a timely update on national policies and statutory requirements designed to promote broader IBS adoption across the industry.
