UiTM Puncak Alam Students Explore Design Through Craft Cement

What does it take to turn a digital concept into a physical object? For final-year Architecture students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam, that challenge became a hands-on experience as they transformed their designs into tangible products using QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement.

The journey began in November 2025, when students were challenged to move beyond the screen and translate their digital ideas into physical forms. When YTL Cement returned to UiTM Puncak Alam in January 2026, the focus shifted from introduction to application, with the session dedicated to reviewing how these ideas were realised through material exploration and creative execution. The session was opened by Dr. Hailane Salam, Head of the Centre of Studies for Architecture, who highlighted the importance of industry collaboration in strengthening design education and practical understanding.

From Classroom Theory to Construction Reality: Masterclass Series 2026 Begins with UMPSA

How does sustainable concrete take shape in real construction practice? This question guided the opening Masterclass of 2026, organised by CDL Academy in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan (UMPSA). Now in its third consecutive year, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening the connection between academic learning and industry practice, with sustainability as a central focus.

The session invited students to explore how cement and concrete are developed, tested and applied in real construction environments. Speakers from YTL Cement’s Construction Development Laboratory (CDL) - Ms. Chew Siok Hoon, Senior Manager, Quality Control and Ts. Nursyuhada Che Hussain, Senior Manager, Technical - shared practical perspectives on material selection, mix design and performance considerations, highlighting how these decisions support durability, efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Students also gained insight into how sustainable concrete solutions are implemented at scale through a real project case study. The discussion illustrated how technical knowledge translates into practical decision-making on complex construction projects, reinforcing the relevance of classroom learning in professional practice.

Shaping Future Architects: YTL Cement’s Masterclass Series at UiTM Puncak Alam

YTL Cement recently conducted an engaging session with final-year Architecture students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam as part of the CDL Academy’s Masterclass Series. The programme highlighted the growing importance of sustainability in the construction industry and emphasised the influential role architects will play in shaping a greener, more innovative built environment.

The session began with an introduction to sustainable building materials, offering students a clearer understanding of how cement and concrete contribute to long-term sustainability within the built environment. This was followed by a presentation and live demonstration by Raja Maizatulakmal Binti Raja Abdullah, Assistant Manager – Quality Control of CDL, who guided students through the fundamentals of cement, its properties, and the process of mixing and applying QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement.

As part of their 3D modelling coursework, students will use QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement to transform their digital designs into physical models. To prepare them for this assignment, the hands-on activity allowed students to test the material firsthand – exploring its texture, workability, and design potential before applying it in their upcoming project submissions.

UMS Students Join Our Masterclass Series on Green Building Materials

YTL Cement recently hosted a virtual CDL Academy Masterclass for third- and fourth-year civil engineering students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), focusing on “Sustainability in Building Materials”. The session provided an overview of YTL Cement’s operations, its commitment to sustainability, and how its ECO product range supports greener construction without compromising performance. Students also gained insights into the cement manufacturing process and real-world applications of sustainable building materials during the Masterclass.

The interactive session saw strong student engagement, with discussions on material performance and cost comparisons between conventional and sustainable cement solutions. Launched in 2019, the CDL Academy Masterclass Series has reached over 1,000 students from universities across Malaysia, reflecting YTL Cement’s ongoing commitment to supporting and educating future engineers in building a more sustainable construction industry.

UNIMAS Joins the Journey Towards Sustainable Construction with CDL Academy Masterclass Series

YTL Cement hosted its CDL Academy Masterclass titled “Sustainable Building Materials” with first and second-year civil engineering students from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). The session highlighted sustainable construction practices, the cement manufacturing process, and the role of innovative concrete solutions, including YTL Cement’s ECO product range, in supporting greener development. Students also gained insights into YTL Cement’s involvement in major infrastructure projects and engaged actively through discussions on the performance, cost and adoption of alternative cement materials.

Masterclass Series: Exploring Tessellation in Design at UCSI University

We partnered with UCSI University for another edition of the CDL Academy Masterclass Series, delivered across two sessions for Year 2 Architectural students. Using QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement, the masterclass challenged students to explore tessellation and aggregatory form-making, encouraging hands-on experimentation with modular design, repetition and materiality.

The first session introduced sustainability in building materials and demonstrated the use of QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement, followed by guided project work. In the second session, students presented their completed works, which were evaluated on design and execution, with three winning pairs recognised. The programme reflects YTL Cement’s ongoing commitment to practical learning and nurturing future architects through real-world material exploration.

Masterclass Series 2025 Kicks off with Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan (UMPSA)

The first Masterclass series of the year kicked off with a virtual session in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan (UMPSA) on 13 January 2025. The session provided students from UMPSA’s civil engineering faculty with an insightful look into understanding the use of sustainable building materials in construction and offered a platform for students to learn about the latest research and issues related to concrete materials.

The session opened with a welcoming remark by Ir. Dr. Chin Siew Choo, Associate Professor, Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology (UMPSA), who commended the collaboration and its importance in bridging academia and industry. Representing YTL Cement, Nina Arianna Binti Indra Prakosa, Communications Executive of YTL Cement, introduced the company's commitment to sustainability and shared insights into the world of cement and concrete to the students. Advancing Green Building Practices with Our Third Masterclass at UiTM

YTL Cement held its third Masterclass at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Puncak Alam's Architecture School on 4 December 2024, reaffirming its commitment to fostering sustainable construction practices among future architects. Organised by CDL Academy, the session provided Semester 4 Architecture students insights into eco-friendly building materials and their significance in architecture.

The Masterclass kicked off with an introduction to YTL Cement by Nina Arianna, Communications Executive, who outlined the basics of cement and concrete, alongside the company's ESG initiatives. This was followed by a technical presentation from Ts. Nursyuhada Che Husain, CDL Technical Manager, who explored advancements in concrete technology and their potential to enhance structural performance while promoting sustainability. A lively Q&A session followed, providing students with the opportunity to engage directly with YTL Cement representatives and gain a deeper understanding of the material and sustainable construction practices.

Building Reefs with QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement

YTL Cement recently held a two-part Masterclass at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to provide second-year Architecture students with hands-on experience in cement and concrete. The sessions aimed to inspire students to incorporate cement into their studies while emphasizing their role in sustainability.

In the first session, Nina Arianna Binti Indra Prakosa, Communications Executive of YTL Cement, introduced the company’s ESG initiatives and demonstrated how to create custom items using QuickMix® DIY Craft Cement. Students were tasked with designing modular tiles based on the theme “Cocoon,” symbolizing protection and transformation.

A month later, the YTL Cement team returned to assess the top eight projects. Students explored the cocoon’s unique structure, experimenting with custom molds and materials like 3D-printed models and foam board. Each group presented their design approach in a 10-minute session.

After evaluation by the YTL Cement team and UKM lecturers, four groups were selected as winners. The Masterclass series reflects YTL Cement’s commitment to sustainability, encouraging future architects to embrace innovative design and eco-friendly materials.

Craft Cement Masterclass Series continues at UKM

Over four weeks, students explored the cocoon’s structure, shape, and symbolism, experimenting with custom molds and materials like 3D-printed models and foam board. Each group presented their concepts in 10-minute sessions, explaining their design process and interpretation of the theme.

The designs were evaluated by YTL Cement and UKM lecturers based on creativity, design approach, and execution. Four groups with the highest scores were named winners, with two tying for third place.

YTL Cement conducted a Masterclass at UCSI University for first-year Architectural students, focused on the importance of using sustainable building materials.

The Masterclass began with Nina Arianna Binti Indra Prakosa, Communications Executive of YTL Cement, who provided insights behind the world of cement and concrete, followed by a sharing session on the company's ESG initiatives. After that, Ts. Nursyuhada Che Hussain, Technical Manager of CDL, delved into the significance of concrete in construction and latest advancements in the cement manufacturing process. Students were also engaged through an interactive Kahoot quiz and a Q&A session, fostering discussions and knowledge sharing about cement.

The Masterclass series aligns with YTL Cement's broader sustainability goals and demonstrates the company's dedication to promoting environmental responsibility in the construction industry. It is geared towards encouraging university students to inspire future engineers to prioritise sustainable building materials within Malaysia's construction industry.

We held a Masterclass with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), focusing on sustainability in building materials. The session provided students from UTM’s civil engineering faculty with an insightful exploration of sustainable construction practices and delved into innovative concrete solutions.

The session also included presentations by Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd. Azreen bin Mohd. Ariffin, Research Fellow, Forensic Engineering Centre (FEC) of the Institute for Smart Infrastructure and Innovative Construction (ISIIC) from the civil engineering faculty who shared insights into the development of geopolymer concrete research products using Malaysia's agro-industrial waste. This was followed with a presentation from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Izni Syahrizal bin Ibrahim, Director, Forensic Engineering Centre (FEC) of the Institute for Smart Infrastructure and Innovative Construction (ISIIC) who discussed the early strength of concrete produced with manufactured sand as a replacement for natural sand.

We kicked off the 2024 Masterclass series with a session on Sustainable Building Materials at Universiti Malaya (UM) with over 40 third-year civil engineering students from UM’s Faculty of Engineering.

The session commenced with an overview of YTL Cement and an explanation of our commitment to sustainability, which was presented by Nina Arianna Binti Indra Prakosa, Communications Executive of YTL Cement. Following that, Chew Siok Hoon, Quality Control Manager of YTL Cement, delved into the significance of concrete in construction and the cement manufacturing process.

Throughout the Masterclass, students gained insight into the use of blended cement to promote sustainability in real-world projects and reinforced their understanding through an interactive Kahoot! quiz session.

Sustainability in Building Materials

We conducted a virtual masterclass with 16 students from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) for a session on “Sustainability in Building Materials”. The session was held virtually to provide an opportunity for civil engineering students to gain theoretical understanding in the field of sustainable building materials. It also included discussions on how innovative concrete solutions can contribute to better performance for foundations and structures, while being a more sustainable option for construction.

Hanging Cement Planters

14 June 2023 | 10am-12pm

We partnered with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for a Masterclass which challenged its Year 2 Architectural students to create hanging cement planters using our QuickMix DIY Craft Cement.

The first session on 31 May 2023 began with a presentation introducing YTL Cement's operations, ESG initiatives, and our range of eco-friendly products that is catered to help Malaysia build better. A demonstration guided the students through the process and techniques of working with QuickMix DIY Craft Cement. The students were then divided into four groups and tasked to produce six hanging planters per group, materialising their design concepts using balloons as molds and QuickMix DIY Craft Cement.

Two weeks later, the students showcased their hanging planters at UPM. Their creations were evaluation on several criteria, including the concept, composition, texture, and finishing. Two groups with the highest scores were declared winners.

The Pet Centre Project

Our commitment to educate and inspire students continue through our second collaboration with the UiTM Architecture School. "The Pet Centre Project" challenges fourth-semester Architecture students to design a one-stop centre for pet necessities using QuickMix DIY Craft Cement. The Masterclass also featured a talk on YTL Cement's ESG initiatives, and our eco-friendly products.

Our speaker shared her experience in concrete projects, including the Signature Tower raft-pouring. The session concluded with a product demonstration of QuickMix DIY Craft Cement to help familiarise students with the use of cement for their scale model project.

We returned to UiTM two weeks later to evaluate eight shortlisted groups. The students were required to present the concept and design of their Pet Centre Project to a panel of judges, with top scorers of the project being awarded cash prizes. 

Sustainable Building Materials

We returned to Universiti Malaya for a Masterclass session on “Sustainable Building Materials" with its final-year civil engineering students. The half-day talk focused on YTL Cement’s ESG commitments and discussed the importance of green building materials to promote sustainable construction. Through this session, we hope to inspire and empower the students to champion sustainability as future engineers.

Biomorphic Pattern Exploration

On 16 January 2023, we visited the School of Built Environment, UiTM Puncak Alam for their week-long Biomorphic Pattern Exploration Event to kick off the YTL Cement Masterclass Series for the year. As part of their “Embodiment of Life” module, 24 Architecture students were tasked with creating concrete tiles referencing the modular patterns found in nature and microorganisms.

To assist with their task, we conducted a session to introduce the basics of cement and concrete to students, demonstrating how our QuickMix DIY Craft Cement can be used to make concrete tiles. Afterwards, the students were briefed on the project's requirement of creating custom molds using hardboard. Following their submissions, 8 students were shortlisted for evaluation by a panel of judges from YTL Cement. At the end of the event, four students with the highest scores were selected as winners and walked away with cash prizes. We were impressed by their unique creations which brought together the best of in-depth research, innovative design, and technical crafting.

Our Seminar Series officially kicked off on 5 April 2022 with our first Masterclass in collaboration with Taylor's University. A total of 60 architecture students attended the "Introduction to Cement and Concrete" Session at the School of Architecture, Building, and Design at Taylor's University. Students were given an inside look into how cement and concrete is used in the precast industry and real-world Industrial Building System (IBS) construction techniques. With the aim to promote the adoption of sustainable building methods, we launched a competition among the students. The challenge - create and build miniature IBS precast models using our QuickMix DIY Craft Cement. A short product demonstration of our Craft Cement showed students how to correctly create precast panels using the product.
